Anthony and Andrew Tartagila are two brothers that grew up on Long Island and started working in the restaurant industry at a very early age developing impressive resumes in the food service and hospitality industry. Anthony has worked in various retuarants on Long Island, Queens and Manhattan while Andrew has worked for years in the travel/resort industry on Fire Island. By the time they were both in their twenties they became partners in the well known Housers Hotel and Restaurant in Ocean Beach. A year later, Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast and caused tremendous damage to many homes and businesses on Fire Island. The brothers took on the task of rebuilding Housers and their Fire Island home. Although they took a big hit from the storm, the experience they gained in rebuilding the bar woud give them the tools and knowledge to build Verde Kitchen & Cocktails. On their own, Anthony and Andrew and their partner and chef Zack Rude, completely transformed the space into the beautiful restaurant that it is today.
On the way back to the mainland from Fire Island one day, Anthony, Andrew and Zack made a decision to create a truly authentic Mexican restaurant in a space that Anthony had recently found in the heart of downtown Bay Shore. Using high quality, fresh, locally sourced ingredients, they would bring a unique dining experience to the South Shore. They spent 3 weeks traveling in Mexico to research cocktails, food and culture. They went beyond eating street tacos in Mexico City and ventured out to meet with local farmers and even Mezcaleros (Mezcal brewers). They still remain in touch with many of the people they met during their trip. They came back to the states ready to begin cultivating a menu that was inspired by their travels and the Mexican lifestyle they experienced.
Before Verde became what it is today, the space was occupied by a small night club. It was dark and had a completely different vibe. Using Anthony's building skills that he gained from maintaining two residental properties with his father, and the experience they had from rebuilding Housers, they went to work on building Verde. From the wood panels that they refurbished and mounted on the walls, to the vintage decor throughout the space, their vision was to create a sustainable, earth friendly interior, with materials that were local and recycled as much as possible.
The greenhouse in the back is the highlight of the space. It's a beautiful cozy spot with plenty of natural light with plants growing behind every table. Depending on the season you'll find a variety of herbs, peppers, tomatoes and various flowers. Everything that grows in the greenhouse is organic and is used in both the food and cocktail menu.
What's on the Menu:
The cuisine at Verde is more than just your typical tacos and guac. The brothers and Zack have been determined from the start to create a menu that was directly inspired by the culture and flavors of Mexico. All of their ingredients are locally sourced and carefully chosen. All of the protein that you'll find on the menu is hormone free, antibiotic free, and organic. Any produce and herbs they cannot grow in the greenhouse come from local farms when possible, and all the seafood is delivered fresh each day. You can truly taste the difference in the freshness and quality. Their Mexico City Street Tacos are a big hit with customers. Besides the delicious fresh ingredients that fill the tacos, what makes them stand out are the tortillas that are made with 100% masa (corn) and are sourced from a local tortilleria. For those who are interested in getting the entire Verde Kitchen experience, it's suggested to start out with thier traditional chips and guacamole and their fresh ceviche of the day. From there, you'll want to explore the tacos, and end with one of their seasonal entrees. The Oaxacan (wa-ha-ken) Style Carne Asada is their most famous entree winning best dish of the year in 2016 and is on the menu year round.
